A Dialogue with History, a View to the Future: Education, Classical Reception and the Scottish Classical Tradition
I will explore how Scotland receives and perceives the Classical world and its relationship to it. I will examine the Scottish Classical tradition, with emphasis on Classical education from the 18th-century onwards. I will investigate how socio-political factors influenced changing attitudes to Classics over the same period. Combining and analysing historical and contemporary perceptions of Classics (history, literature and language) will enable me to consider how Classics can be promoted in Scotland, primarily through schools and museums, in a relevant and inclusive manner.
My research will be very impact-driven. I will explore how the National Museum of Scotland and other major collections present Greco-Roman collections. Employing qualitative data-gathering methods, I will shadow tours given to visiting groups to observe how guides present material. I will conduct semi-structured interviews with guides. Observations and interviews will be analysed thematically. I will examine how socio-politics influences the presentation of Greco-Roman material, identifying biases that may exist.
