My research involves an analysis of developing forms of regulation for internet platforms with a specific focus on how this regulation will enable platforms to combat the spread of “fake news”. In this way, the research will proceed through two main investigations.

The first investigation will be a legal-philosophical analysis of the concept of disinformation. This will be further split into two investigations involving both an analysis of the value of false information in free speech philosophy and a legal analysis involving the European Court of Human Right’s de facto treatment of false speech. The second investigation will be a comparative analysis of models for regulating disinformation by internet platforms. This will involve engagement with different legal and extra-legal approaches to regulation being taken by European member states, the United States and in various other parts of the world. This will be achieved through an examination of guiding principles in EU law (where relevant), sovereign state case law, ECtHR rulings and relevant academic literature.
