The role of improvisational strategies in artistic labour, specifically addressing the use of improvisation in experimental film and animation.

I intend to develop improvisational strategies following a survey of existing research in the field. The development of practice-based predesignated strategies will involve using imposed constraints as a testing apparatus to derive key qualitative factors related to indeterminacy and open structure in my practice.

Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the process will entail deconstruction of visual and sonic language structure of animation. Through structured interviewing, I will engage artist animators to identify a typology of improvisational strategies in the field utilising extant concepts of the improvisational in art and music contexts. Within the theorisation of musical improvisation, the influence of ‘faking jazz’ improvisers and the attendant debate regarding the presence of pre-defined structure, will act as a point of comparison for animation.
