The influence of the early modern architect Sebastiano Serlio in respect of France, the Low Countries, England, and, Scotland.
This is put in relation to Serlio’s mathematical theory which combines Euclidean geometry with Neoplatonic philosophy and, is still to be considered an obscure part of scholarly knowledge on Serlio. Hence, a mathematical reading on Serlio is imposed through which an innovative methodology brings together interpretative historical research with 3D laser-scanning.
A CAD reinterpretation of Wittkower’s diagrammatic drawing will help visualise Serlio’s mathematics which will form the basis for further comparative research. This informs how Serlio’s mathematics was disseminated, received and interpreted in the early modern world which is useful for the understanding of a ‘Serlian’ approach to architectural historiography.
