National Museum Scotland: Understanding Audiences for Cold War Heritage

Location
Largely in-person at National Museum Scotland (NMS) sites: mostly at the National Museum of Scotland in central Edinburgh, but also the National Museums Collection Centre in North Edinburgh, the National War Museum in Edinburgh Castle and the National Museum of Flight in East Lothian. Some attendance at the University of Stirling. Up to 40% remote would be possible.
Project
The project is titled "Understanding Audiences for Cold War Heritage". This internship will involve audience research and impact activity design for Cold War heritage at National Museums Scotland (NMS). It is offered in conjunction with ‘Materialising the Cold War’, a collaborative AHRC-funded research project with the University of Stirling. The intern will explore audience responses to the Cold War Scotland exhibition at NMS and then scope plans for further engagement activities relating to Cold War material culture.
Outputs
First, the intern will generate qualitative and quantitative datasets of audience responses the Cold War Scotland and other outputs of the Materialising the Cold War project. Then they will research options and design further activities that could follow on from the project (e.g. pop-up displays, online exhibitions).
Timescale
Application Deadline: 8th August 2024
Start date (or must start by): 1 October 2024
End date (or must end by): 30 March 2025
Preferably single block of 12 weeks but part-time arrangements may be possible.
Benefits to the Researcher
The intern will gain skills in audience research and engagement design. They will gain insights in the functioning of a major national museum and the nature of heritage networks.
Key Relationships
The intern will work with onsite audiences at the National Museum of Scotland and other sites, working closely with the Materialising the Cold War research project team (academics at the University of Stirling, curators at NMS).
