Cassiltoun Housing Association - A Museum for Castlemilk

Apply for this SGSAH-funded internship with Cassiltoun Housing Association, up to 12 weeks FTE, between January & October 2025.

The project is titled A Museum for Castlemilk and will involve inventorying and cataloguing collections relating to Castlemilk, collecting new material and running community activities to engage local communities in various programmes.

Deadline for Applications is 15th November 2024.

Location

Some work would take place on site at the Cassiltoun Housing Association at
Castlemilk Stables with the collections but some could also be carried out remotely.

Project

The project is titled "A Museum for Castlemilk". Castlemilk has a rich history from the lives of the Stuart family and life at Castlemilk House through to the memories of the modern residents as Castlemilk sees its 70th anniversary. There are stories of privilege and protest. At the centre of the community is Castlemilk Stables, home of Cassiltoun Housing Association a refurbished stables block, originally designed by David Hamilton in 1790.

It sits on the edge of Castlemilk Park, once part of the designed landscape and pleasure grounds of Castlemilk House which has now been demolished. There have been attempts to collect historical material relating to the Stables and the area. However this has not been done in a systematic way. We would like to inventory the existing material (much of which has come from an archaeological dig in Castlemilk Park and from oral histories with local residents) with a view to creating displays, booklets and other materials celebrating the history of Castlemilk and collect the stories of local residents before they are lost.

We would also like to identify gaps in the collection and develop initiatives such as new oral histories and potentially collecting to fill these. There is also the opportunity to provide suggestions on how these collections are developed, catalogued and stored and how this work progresses in future as well as opportunities to work with the community to engage them in these histories through our vibrant Community Development programmes.

Outputs

1. A report of suggestions on how these materials should be catalogued, stored and developed in future and with suggestions for future community engagement and involvement.
2. Inventorying and cataloguing collections relating to Castlemilk and researching items so that we understand their significance.
3. Collecting new materials- this could be oral histories, items or other collections.
4. Running community activities to engage local communities in these programmes.
5. An output- this is flexible, it could be a display, a film, a booklet, social media and web content etc. We would also like to showcase this work in Castlemilk Stables for events such as Doors Open Day.

Timescale

Application Deadline: 15th November 2024

Start date (or must start by): Flexible

End date (or must end by): Flexible

Project can be worked full time, part time or flexibly in blocks (one day a week would be preferable for the partner organisation)

Benefits to the Researcher

The intern will gain an understanding of community heritage. They will also engage with museum practice: Our Community Development and Engagement Manager worked in museums for 20 years and can supervise and support this role. Our Community Woodland Officer also worked in heritage roles with the National Trust for Scotland previously.

They will enhance historical research skills and knowledge.

They will gain an understanding of community development in practice: The Intern will also work with a community development team and will have opportunities to create a meaningful archive for a local area, make a real impact to local communities and engage with a variety of communities.

We are keen for the intern to take initiative and to develop and lead this work to come up with their own outputs in consultation with the community.
