The PhD Applicant Mentoring Scheme provides support to SGSAH applicants who face structural barriers in Higher Education.
Who is the scheme designed for?
The scheme is open to anyone who is applying for SGSAH funding in the next round of offers (SGSAH deadlines are in February 2025) and has faced structural barriers through Higher Education.
What does the scheme entail?
The scheme will run from September 2024 to February 2025, during which time mentors and mentees will be expected to meet three times, based on mutual convenience. The mentor will be able to help support the mentee through the PhD and SGSAH application process – advising on how to polish the application form, how to locate suitable supervisors, and navigating the transition into PhD research.
Who is eligible to be a mentor?
Any 3rd/4th Year PhD Student within the stipendiary portion of their PhD is eligible. You will be paid £250 for your time, with payment made through your stipend. If you have mentored on this scheme before, you are more than welcome to apply again.
Important Dates
- 30th August – deadline for applications
- 13th September – mentor-mentee allocation finalised
- 18th September– Mentor and Mentee training sessions
- September –February – Mentoring meetings and writing workshops
- End-of-February – debriefing sessions and evaluation
How to apply?
In order to apply as a mentor, you will need to fill out a short form which will ask you some background questions, and then:
- What is your area of research?
- What structural barriers have you faced?
- What are your reasons for joining the scheme?
- What support for mentors would you like to see SGSAH put in place?
We hope you will be interested in signing up as a potential mentor. If so, please complete this short form.
Deadline for applications is Friday, 30th August.
