Creative Arts & Design Catalyst: Politics of a Collective Ear

Studio 2 - Advanced Research Centre, University of Glasgow

Dr Richy Carey, Professor Maria Fusco and Professor Salomé Voegelin

About this Session

The training workshop will explore sound’s capacity to articulate difference as a site of relation rather than opposition. We will consider ways we might read theory, texts and thought through one another, rather than against one another, to facilitate creative and generative outcomes.

Professor Maria Fusco will provide an overview for the session, then the guest speaker, Professor Salomé Voegelin, will join us remotely to introduce a provocation on the politics of voice, sound and collectivity. Dr Richy Carey will lead a practical workshop for up to 20 participants, this will take place in-person.

Following Professor Voegelin’s provocation, Dr Richy Carey will employ simple writing exercises to compose verbal scores that speak to each participants own research, before using our voices to make music from these scores, with an ear tuned to listening across these differences to a collective voice that can accommodate complexity and contradiction.
