About this Session
This session will give you the opportunity to reflect on your PhD project, your relationship with supervisors, and help you consider how these align with your long-term goals. In the session, we will emphasise the importance of taking a proactive role in the PhD project. You will reflect on your goals and priorities during and beyond the PhD and how these may differ from the priorities of other stakeholders involved in the project (including supervisors, funding bodies, and other institutional actors). We will also discuss some misconceptions about the supervisory relationship and practical strategies through which you can establish an effective dynamic with your supervisors.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, participants will:
- Reflect on your personal and professional aspirations and consider how you can use the PhD project to progress your goals;
- Understand potential conflicting priorities between you and your supervisors and how these may impact your project;
- Identify strategies through which you can establish a productive working relationship with your supervisors and manage the relationship for mutual benefit.
