Anna Talley
Anna Talley, Sara Day Thomson and Alice Austin are collaborators on the ‘Ghosts in the Machine: Using Web Archives for Humanities Research’ workshop, held at the University of Edinburgh. Anna is a doctoral researcher in Design at the Edinburgh College of Art, Sara Day Thomson is a Digital Archivist at the University of Edinburgh and Dr Alice Austin is a Web Archivist at the University of Edinburgh.
About this Session
This session will introduce web archives and provide a brief overview of how they can be used in research. Following this, the rest of the session will take the form of a ‘research surgery’. Researchers will be able to ask questions about web archives, how they can be used as primary sources in their projects, methods, and issues around copyright and ethics. Participants will be expected to arrive with pre-prepared questions regarding web archives that are relevant to their current or prospective research projects. After the workshop, participants have an understanding of web archives and how they can be used in their own research.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, participants will:
- have an understanding of what web archives are and where to access them
- understand, through the case study of an AHRC-funded project, how web archives can be used in research
- understand how web archives can be used in their own research.
Who might be interested?
This session will be of interest to any postgraduate research student in all disciplines of the arts and humanities looking to expand their knowledge of new research sources and methods. We will attract these audiences by offering an introduction to web archives that addresses interdisciplinary research practices and concerns.
