Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
At the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities (SGSAH), Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) are at the heart of our commitment to supporting doctoral researchers across Scotland. Guided by our values of respect, integrity, creativity and collaboration, we work to foster a research environment where everyone can participate, contribute and thrive.
Over recent years, SGSAH has strengthened its EDI activity through dedicated leadership, strategic investment and researcher-led initiatives. Doctoral researchers play a central role in shaping our work through the SGSAH Doctoral Researcher Committee, ensuring that diverse perspectives inform decision-making and future developments across our programmes.
We are proud to support a growing range of researcher networks, established in partnership with the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science (SGSSS). These include the Global Majority PhD Network, Disabled PhD Researchers’ Network, International PGR Network and Part-time PhD Network, providing spaces for connection, peer support and community-building.
Our commitment to widening participation is also reflected in the Stuart Hall Fellowships, delivered in partnership with the Stuart Hall Foundation. These fellowships support doctoral researchers from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds while celebrating Professor Stuart Hall’s legacy of social justice and transformation.
Alongside these initiatives, SGSAH leads and contributes to sector-wide conversations on inclusion through mentoring programmes, pipeline summer schools, supervisor development activities and national EDI events. Together, these activities are helping to create a more inclusive, representative and supportive doctoral research community across Scotland.
