This is an innovative year long integrated language & cultural competency skills development programme aimed at doctoral students from October 2016. The programme provides an opportunity to learn basic Russian or Mandarin, & apply for a travel bursary of up to £2,000 to spend time in Russia or China!

Who can apply?
Open to any PhD researcher in arts & humanities at a SGSAH member HEI in second year or above, regardless of funding source.
What is on offer?
- Intensive language training in Russian or Mandarin from October 2016
- Cultural awareness training to develop your understanding of life in China or Russia
- Travel expenses & accommodation
- The chance to apply for a travel bursary of up to £2,000 to China or Russia for up to one month in summer period of 2017.

Language Programme in Russian - University of Glasgow
Outcomes:
- provide students with the linguistic skills they will need to cope confidently, at a fairly basic level, with most everyday social & “survival” situations in Russian
- develop general linguistic competence, particularly oral skills
- encourage self-directed learning
- insight into the culture and way of life of the target country, to enable them to integrate more easily into a foreign environment
- A2 in the Common European Framework for Languages.

Language Programme in Mandarin - University of Edinburgh
Outcomes:
- to direct students towards a practical & efficient approach to Chinese language learning
- raise students’ cultural awareness in language learning
- equip students with skills for future self-directed language learning
- guide students in developing all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading & writing) at the elementary level in a balanced manner
Course dates:
Tuesday 25 October 2016 – Friday 28 October 2016
Tuesday 1 November 2016 – Friday 4 November 2016
Tuesday 8 November 2016 – Friday 11 November 2016
Thursday 17 November 2016 – Friday 18 November 2016
An additional monthly class will be run between December 2016 & April 2017.
Travel bursaries
Students who successfully complete* the language learning programme will have the opportunity to apply to spend up to one month in China or Russia during the summer period of 2017, completing a study trip planned around their particular interests or needs.
The choice of activity is student-led, though students will receive support from academic staff in creating an appropriate programme. Students accepted on to this final stage of ‘Speaking my language’ will be supported by funding of up to £2,000.
*requires full attendance unless there are special circumstances eg absence on medical grounds
