Research Interests:
My research interests are mainly within the late Medieval and the Renaissance in Italy and beyond. I am particularly interested in cultural and social history: the lived experience of people at the time and the way that art and architecture was used in public and private space to promote ideas and reputations. I am particularly concerned with cultural and religious boundaries: the complex nature of relationships between different religious and ethnic groups, cross-cultural influences in art and the experience of travellers such as traders, missionaries and diplomats in the early modern world. Although my research is based in Venice, it has a global outlook in its study of immigrant merchants. Other areas of interest are the art and culture of 16th century Mughal courts and Italian literature from Medieval to Renaissance.
