Sorcha Dallas
The Alasdair Gray Archive Custodian

Join the Custodian of The Alasdair Gray Archive, Sorcha Dallas, for this online session. Dallas will discuss building an Archive that reflects Gray's own approach to making as as a socially focused action that reflects his values of collaboration, equity and honesty.

In this interactive session, we will go back to basics and try to explore what we mean by the terms ‘merit’ and ‘potential’, and think about how helpful they really are. Given how central they are to so much of academia, are we sure these concepts are fit for purpose? Can we imagine a world where merit and potential are not something to be judged, and used to rank us against each other? What would such a world look like?

By the end of this session participants will understand new approaches to archiving and how they can be used for wider engagement.

Sorcha Dallas graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 1998, developing a creative practice centred on working with others. In 2007 she began working with Scottish polymath Alasdair Gray, gaining widespread critical and commercial appreciation for his previously unseen body of visual work. After Alasdair’s death in 2019 she was tasked with legacy planning which led to the creation of The Alasdair Gray Archive, a charity that prioritises learning, public engagement and ongoing creative commissioning. She has created all of this with Gray’s ethical framework at its core and reflecting his approach to making as a socially focused action. Her practice is centred on collaborative learning and facilitative leadership.

This workshop is being run in conjunction with The Agnes Owens Archive.
