Project

Turning the Tide: Creative Climate Action for Uncharted Climate Emergencies.
Fablevision is the Scottish partner in a large scale Creative Europe project, Turning the Tide (TTT) - a collaboration of 4 cities using cultural planning methodology to work with socially engaged artists. The project partners, headed by Intercult in Sweden, are leading an international experiment - interrogating the possible contribution of artists and local people to transforming the narrative on climate change and climate justice.

Turning the Tide in Scotland, a collaboration between Fablevision, the University of the West of Scotland and Creative Carbon Scotland, hosted the high profile context setting event in Glasgow, April 2024 (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XYMjIy7Kt71VVrkhw2nvyd59ZI31vN0R/edit)
Our first residency was in Gdansk, Poland engaged artists from the partner cities who use place based socially-engaged, participatory, interventionist and/or community arts practice, Scotland based artist, Robyn Woolston made a film during her residency which will be shown at the seminar on November 13th.

Partners are now engaged in local activity with locally based artists and cross sectoral partnerships exploring themes in their own locations. With support from Creative Scotland, we are able to continue working on TTT themes in Scotland and contribute to the high-profile European collaborative project. The next opportunity for a Scotland based artist to participate internationally will be Evoia (Greece) in June 2025.

Background: Building on a series of projects that were initiated by Fablevision and the University of the West of Scotland in the twenty teens (Govan Gdansk - 2014 - 17; Riverside Solidarity 2017-19 and Memory of Water - 2020 - 22) Turning the Tide is the next stage of an ever deeper exploration of the role of artists in waterfront regeneration. Due to BREXIT, Scotland is no longer able to be a full partner in Turning the Tide but in acknowledgement of the expertise and innovative practices delivered here over decades, the project partners have worked hard to keep Fablevision, UWS and Scotland on board.
